Building the Next Generation of Volunteers

Service has no age requirement—and this year’s Spring Rebuild Day proved exactly that.

Across project sites, a new generation of volunteers showed up ready to get their hands dirty. Among them were Finn and Poppy, who spent their Saturday morning giving back alongside their dad, Sean McNamara, a Project Manager at Gilbane Building Company. For them, the day wasn’t just about helping a neighbor in need, it was about spending meaningful time together while contributing to something bigger than themselves.

That spirit aligns closely with Gilbane’s long-standing commitment to community impact. Guided by their “Gilbane Cares” philosophy, the company continues to show up year after year, expanding its presence and deepening its investment in the neighborhoods it serves.

Stella Hagerman, daughter of Jeff Hagerman of The Hagerman Group, is already a seasoned volunteer in her own right. This marked her third year participating in Spring Rebuild Day, representing an impressive commitment and reflecting how powerful early experiences in service can be.

“If someone needs help, you should do it—and do it for free if they need it.”

It’s a message that captures the heart of Rebuilding Together Indianapolis. Neighbors helping neighbors, with no expectation other than making a difference.

For young volunteers like Finn, Poppy, and Stella, Spring Rebuild Day is more than a one-day event. It’s an introduction to empathy, generosity, and the importance of community. It’s where values are shaped, connections are formed, and a lifelong commitment to service can begin.

And for everyone watching them pick up a paintbrush or lend a helping hand, it’s a reminder: the future of our communities is already hard at work.
