Bryan McHugh’s Commitment to Service

For Bryan McHugh, a spark from volunteering turned into more than a decade of commitment to Rebuilding Together Indianapolis and the neighbors it serves.

Bryan’s journey began in 2010 when he returned to Indianapolis to work on the Super Bowl XLVI Village. Having volunteered in other cities, he was already looking for ways to give backand quickly found his place with Rebuilding Together. What started as volunteering grew into deeper involvement – from serving as a house captain to becoming a board member.

“It’s been great,” Bryan says. “I’ve had a lot of fun. It’s wonderful to be out working with our community members and neighbors to help make things a little easier for them.”

That desire to help others is something Bryan sees in volunteers year after year. Whether it’s first-time participants or longtime supporters, the motivation is often the same.

“Everyone knows people are struggling, especially with rising costs,” he explains. “Anything you can do to help your neighbors is a huge driver.”

That collective effort is what makes Rebuild Day possible. Volunteers show up ready to work, often bringing family members along to share in the experience. Bryan has even had his own niece and nephew join him over the years, a great opportunity to pass along the value of service to the next generation. Partnerships with skilled contractors who donate their time and expertise further strengthen the impact, ensuring homeowners receive both care and quality work.

Bryan and his team focused on critical repairs that made a real difference in daily life. Earlier in the week, they inspected the home’s furnace and air conditioning system and ensured the plumbing was functioning properly.

“Phyllis got her warm shower now,” Bryan shares. “She had a cold shower before, so she was very ecstatic about the change.”

It’s a simple upgrade, but one that transforms comfort, dignity, and peace of mind. Additional work is already planned, including support from an electrician who will continue improving the home’s safety in the coming weeks.

For Bryan, these moments are what matter most. They’re a reminder that even small fixes can have a lasting impact.

“I hope volunteers realize how much they’re changing someone’s life,” he says. “Even the things we consider small are meaningful.”
