What's Going On with Rebuilding Together Indianapolis

January 11, 2018

What a wonderful year of accomplishments it has been for Rebuilding Together Indianapolis! We have been hard at work engaging new board members and recruiting even more to lead the cause in 2018. Long time board member Bill Davis graciously stepped into the Executive Director’s role and replaced the “difficult shoes to fill” of Vicki Perkins who for years tirelessly worked to uphold our mission of delivering a sustainable impact on every home and life that we touched.

The Rebuilding Together Indianapolis Board of Directors updated our strategic plan to include four primary objectives:

  1. Further defining roles and responsibilities of our board, staff and committees.

  2. Upgrading our branding and mes...

Each year for the past 10 years the Indianapolis Colts have built playgrounds around the Greater Indianapolis area, all of which have been constructed in underserved areas of the city.  In 2011 the Colts added Rebuilding Together Indianapolis as a partner to increase the impact of the project by improving the space with landscaping, painting, and other beautification elements.

This year, a new playground was built at Jonathan Jennings School # 109.  Rebuilding Together Indianapolis’ contribution to the project included: directing over 100 volunteers in reconstructing benches and a blackboard for an outdoor classroom, trimming, weeding and mulching around school property, repainting of games on the school...

Back in August 2016, at the corner of East 23rd Street and North Arsenal Avenue, rests the family home of Lewis Morris, a veteran of the Marines. Morris had been homeless for some time when City Contractor, Tony Roberts, wandered over to the home one morning where he found Morris asleep in the backyard.

Even though the house was rundown and dilapidated, Morris found himself returning to his childhood downtown home where he would sleep in the backyard. He simply wanted to be close to the only place that has ever felt like home. After having a conversation with Morris and realizing Morris' last name matched the home's previous owner, Roberts wanted to do something to help him out.

Veterans make up roughly...

This opportunity supported the participation of two local board members at the National Conference, which allowed them to expand their knowledge of Rebuilding Together best practices across the country.

RTI President, David Werking of ERMCO, Inc. and Past President Bill Davis of Key Bank attended. David commented, “Attending the national conference is a big part of the local board’s commitment to assuring that we are putting forth the best possible program in striving to meet the expectations of our community, spons...

The City County Council recognized Rebuilding Together Indianapolis for its commitment to Indianapolis neighborhood revitalization.  Bill Davis, Craig Jackson and John Griffin accepted the award on behalf of Rebuilding Together Indianapolis. The council thanked Rebuilding Together Indianapolis for their continued commitment to improving our city by strengthening our neighborhoods on home at a time.

Ironically, at the same meeting, the Council endorsed naming the new Transit Center after former Congresswoman Julia Carson.  Bill Davis commented that it seemed appropriate because Julia was a long standing supporting of Rebuilding Together Indianapolis and strengthening the core of our city with grass roots...

As we celebrate Veterans Day across this great nation, Rebuilding Together Indianapolis took a moment to utilize our time and talents to help a veteran right here at home in Indianapolis.  On Friday, November 6th, our friends at Fifth Third Bank joined forces with us to create a team to rehabilitate the home of a Hoosier veteran, Tyrone.  Tyone is an Indianapolis native who served 10 years in the U.S. Army National Guard. He completed deployments in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars before being forced to retire due to his injuries.

Tyrone's home required several significant updates, including a new heating and cooling system, redisign of an outdated kitchen and painting and floor repairs. More th...
