About Us

What We Do
After months of planning and preparation, Rebuilding Together Indianapolis culminates in a one-day work blitz on the last Saturday in April. This year, workday will be held on April 26, 2008. In 2007, over 850 volunteers of all ages, faiths and walks of life joined forces to rehabilitate 23 homes in the United Northwest Neighborhood.

Who We Help
Rebuilding Together Indianapolis provides assistance to people who own their own home but who, because of physical limitation or low income, are struggling to cover the costs of home repair. Typically, these individuals have a disability and/or are elderly, but low-income families and non-profit facilities such as schools, shelters and daycare centers are also included.

  • The current 24 million low-income homeowner families are expected to grow to an astonishing 28.5 million by 2010. This growth means that more and more families are placed in the position of choosing between vital necessities, such as food and medicine, or a roof that does not leak.
  • Of the 41 million low- to moderate-income people in the United States, 14.4 spend 50 percent-plus of their income on housing
  • Nationally, property taxes have increased 48 percent since 1995.

Who Sponsors Rebuilding Together Indianapolis?
Rebuilding Together is completely funded by donations. Donated funds come from corporations, individuals, labor organizations, foundations, civic organizations and religious organizations interested in helping build a better community.

How Are Homeowners Selected?
The selection process takes place locally. Qualified homeowners are low-income, elderly or disabled and unable to make the needed repairs themselves. Referrals come from a variety of sources including non-profit agencies, police departments, social service organizations, churches, synagogues and individuals. The Rebuilding Together Indianapolis program invited over 20 neighborhood organizations to apply for the 2007 program. A selection committee was formed from the Rebuilding Together Indianapolis Board of Directors to select the Neighborhood of the Year. Once the neighborhood was selected, individual homeowners were asked to apply.

Is Rebuilding Together Indianapolis Affiliated With A Particular Church Or Religion?
No. The program embraces all people: all faiths, walks of life, racial and ethnic groups, ages and sexes.

Is There A Charge For Rebuilding Together Indianapolis Services?
No. All repairs are free. Our work is done with families, not for them. Homeowners and family members are asked to participate as extensively as possible in the rehabilitation of their house.
